School of Art for Buxton and Leek College, Leek
The new Leek School of Art provides contemporary facilities for a range of subjects taught at Leek including fine art, printmaking, textiles, graphics, pottery and 3d design. Our proposal responds to the architecture of the surrounding context by arranging the building over three levels that provides a connection to the adjacent Grade II listed Nicholson Institute, creates a courtyard entrance to the School of Art and new cafe, and creates art studios that step down the steeply sloping site.
The school of art has been designed so that the connected cafe can be opened in isolation at the weekend providing a real-world learning environment for the students and the potential for a new public cafe.
The building is designed to meet BREEAM Excellent, as required by the Skills Funding Agency who part funded the scheme.
